Episode Summary

What Is Relationship OCD and How Do You Know If It’s More Than Normal Doubt?

Every relationship has moments of worry. Did I say the wrong thing? Did I offend someone? But OCD takes those moments and turns them up until they stop being grounded in reality. I talk about how this shows up with spouses, dating partners, coworkers, and even your kids. I also share the sneaky compulsions I see most, including some that look like being responsible.

Why Can’t You Just Figure Out If You Love Someone Enough?

Here’s the trap. OCD asks you to measure something that can’t be measured. There is no love-o-meter. There’s no finger clip that gives you a reading on attraction. I walk through why the checking makes the anxiety louder, and why you tend to find exactly what you’re afraid of. There’s a term from iCBT for what your mind creates in those moments, and it changed how I explain this.

How Do Hallmark Movies and Mixed Advice Make Relationship Anxiety Worse?

Pull up the internet and you’ll find advice for every side of every question. Even within Christian circles, people hold very different views on how marriage should work. OCD grabs all of it and uses it as hearsay evidence. I share a bit of my own story here, plus what love actually looked like for me on an ordinary Tuesday night. It’s not what the movies promised.

Can Past Relationships Make Relationship OCD Harder to Overcome?

Sometimes your history becomes the case file. A parent’s marriage. A painful breakup. A divorce. OCD says, “We’ve seen this before, so it will happen again.” I open up about dating after divorce and how scary that felt. I also talk about what to do if you’ve never had a healthy relationship to copy.

Why Do Mental Compulsions Make Relationship OCD So Hard to Treat?

Rumination doesn’t look like a compulsion from the outside. Neither does endless googling or feeding your whole relationship history into an AI chatbot. I explain why I’m cautious about that last one, and why more information usually leaves you more frozen. I also share the approach I believe fits these mental loops best, and why it may help when other treatment left you still stuck.
