Episode Summary:

I invited one of my closest friends in the counseling profession, Anika Mullen, to join me on the podcast. She’s a Licensed Professional Counselor, a compassionate expert in parenting support, and someone whose wisdom I deeply admire. When we first met, she told me, “It’s like Monica—but without the M.” That line has stuck with me ever since.

We were deep into recording an incredibly meaningful episode, diving into how Parent-Child Interaction Therapy—also known as PCIT—helps children who struggle with tantrums, behavioral issues, and anxiety. We were nearly finished when I realized I had made a huge mistake. I hadn’t hit record. My heart sank. I felt completely mortified. But Anika, being the gracious human that she is, smiled and said, “Carrie, it’s okay. Just hit record. Let’s do it again.” And that moment reminded me why I love having these conversations—because they’re not just about information, they’re about connection, growth, and real grace.

We also discuss how PCIT has been adapted for telehealth, making it more accessible to families who might not live near a trained provider. Anika was ahead of the curve, shifting to online therapy even before the pandemic, and she explains how coaching parents in their actual home environment has made the therapy even more effective and easier to apply long-term.

Toward the end of our talk, Anika introduces an exciting adaptation of PCIT specifically designed for anxiety—PCIT-CALM. This version is tailored to support children who may appear defiant but are actually responding to anxiety. It’s a beautiful example of how nuanced and responsive this therapeutic approach can be.

If you’re a parent feeling overwhelmed, wondering why your usual strategies aren’t working, or if you’re simply curious about a research-based way to connect more deeply with your child and reduce daily stress, this episode is for you. Whether your child is dealing with anxiety, big emotions, defiant behavior, or just the everyday rollercoaster of growing up, there is hope—and there are tools.

Tune in to the full episode to hear this deeply encouraging and insightful conversation with Anika Mullen. You’ll walk away feeling supported, informed, and ready to try something new that could transform your parenting journey. This is one you won’t want to miss.
